1 3/4 c. flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1/2 tsp salt
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla
2 sq semi-sweet chocolate, melted
1/2 c. milk
1/2 c. nuts (optional)

Frosting:
1 T. butter
1 sq. semi-sweet chocolate, melted
3 T light cream
1 1/2 - 2 c. powdered sugar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar together. Add egg and chocolate and beat well. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk. Stir in nuts. Drop by spoonful on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 375º for 12 minutes. Cool. Mix together frosting ingredients. Spread on cooled cookies..

If you don't have semi-sweet baking squares you can substitute 3 T cocoa and 3 T sugar and 1 T melted butter for each square in the recipe. Semi-sweet chocolate chips (3 T chocolate chips= 1 square of chocolate)work in a pinch as well but are often sweeter and don't melt as smoothly.
