12 slices of white bread, crusts cut off
2-3 T butter
½ butter
½ fresh ???? (can't read) sliced
1-2 C thinly sliced onion

1½ lbs. mild Italian or breakfast sausage
¾ - 1 lbs cheddar cheese, grated
5 eggs
2½ c. milk
3 tsp. Dijon mustard
1 tsp. dry mustard
1 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. parsley

This strata is great for family holiday breakfasts since it needs to be prepared the night before then baked before serving.

Think about what you like. This recipe calls for sweet/mild Italian sausage. I included the option of breakfast sausage. What other types of sausage do you like? Sausages vary a lot. Whatever type you choose will effect the final outcome of the dish. Experiment!

Using a 9 x 13 pan, layer 6 slices of buttered bread on the bottom.
Then add sauteed onion, cooked, crumbled and drained sausage, and grated cheese.
Top with remaining 6 slices buttered bread.
Beat eggs, add milk, mustards, nutmeg and chopped parsley.
Mix thoroughly.
Pour over casserole.
Cover with saran or foil and refrigerate overnight.
Remove cover and bake at 350 degrees for 40- 45 minutes or until thoroughly heated and bubbly.

***Hint-Whenever heating a refrigerated casserole, if possible, remove from fridge and allow to come up to room temperature for an hour or two.
