2 c.flour
2 c. sugar
tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. soda
1 tsp. salt
tsp. cinnamon
tsp. cloves
tsp. allspice
c. soft shortening
c. water
1 c. unsweetened applesauce
2 eggs
c. chopped walnuts (optional)

Directions:
Directions:
Heat oven to 350. Grease and flour two layer pans, or a 9x13 inch oblong pan. Blend dry ingredients in bowl. Add shortening, water, and applesauce. Beat 2 minutes, using medium speed on a mixer. Scrape sides and bottom of bowl constantly. Add eggs and beat another 2 minutes. Stir in walnuts. Pour batter into pan(s). Bake layers 35 to 40 minutes and oblong 45 to 50 minutes. Cool.
