2 c. sugar
1 c. (½ lb)butter or margarine, melted
¼ c. each anise seeds and anisette (or other anise-flavored liqueur).
3 T. whiskey OR 2 tsp. vanilla with 2 T. water
6 eggs
5½ c. all-purpose flour
1 T. baking powder
2 c. coarsely chopped almonds or walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
In a bowl, mix sugar with butter, anise seeds, anisette, and whiskey. Beat in the eggs. Mix flour with baking powder and stir thoroughly into sugar mixture. Mix in the nuts. Cover and refrigerate for 2-3 hours.
Directly on greased baking sheets, shape dough with your hands to form flat loaves, about ½” thick, 2” wide, and as long as the baking sheet. Place the loaves two to a pan, parallel, and well spaced apart.
Bake in a 375ºoven for 20 minutes or until lightly browned.
Remove from the oven and let cool on baking sheets until you can touch them.
Cut the loaves into diagonal slices ½” to ¾” thick. Place slices close together with the “cut” sides down on the baking sheet, and bake in a 375º oven for 15 more minutes or until lightly toasted.
Cool on wire racks and store in airtight containers.
