3 lbs. fresh asparagus (or 3 pkgs. (10 oz. each) frozen asparagus thawed and well drained
3 T. butter or margarine
2 T. all-purpose flour
1½ c. milk
3/4 c. shredded Parmesan cheese, divided
1/8 t. salt
2/3 c. soft bread crumbs
1 T. butter, melted
1/4 t. paprika

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350º. Arrange asparagus in a lightly greased 13x9 baking dish.
Melt 3 T. butter in a heavy saucepan over medium heat; whisk in flour until smooth. Cook, whisking consistently, for 1 minute. Gradually add milk; cook, whisking consistently, until thickened and bubbly. Stir in 1/2 c. cheese and the salt; pour over asparagus.
Stir together remaining 1/4 c. cheese, breadcrumbs, 1 T. butter and paprika. Sprinkle evenly over casserole.
Bake 25-30 minutes or until thoroughly heated.
