Directions:Mix together milk, sugar and salt. Add yeast. Stir till yeast dissolves. Let sit for a few minutes until yeast bubbles.
Stir in eggs. Add raisins. Add butter or shortening. Stir in enough flour to make a stiff dough.
Turn dough out on a lightly floured surface. Cover and let rise 15 minutes to tighten up. Knead until elastic. Round up and place dough in a greased bowl. Cover with plastic and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 ½ - 2 hours). Punch dough down, cover and let rise again until not quite doubled (about 30 minutes).
Divide dough into two parts. Form into loaves and place in greased loaf pans. Brush tops with butter and sprinkle with sugar. Cover and let rise one hour.
Bake loaves at 350º for 50 minutes or until loaf is browned and sounds hollow when tapped on the bottom. |

Notes: I like to put the raisins in a small saucepan, cover them with water and boil for a minute or two. Drain and add the raisins to the dough. This will put nice plump raisins in your bread. You can add some of the raisin juice. Just delete that amount of milk from the recipe. I also put about a tablespoon of cinnamon in the dough.
