Notes: Jessica relayed this memory to me: I remember one Xmas when we all got together at Aunt Joan's house to decorate cut out cookies. I couldn't have been older than 9, I remember Allysa was so little she was still in a high chair. Aunt Joan had told the adults to make a dozen cookies per child that was coming with you. Well Aunt Deb thought that she was supposed to make a dozen cookies per kid that was coming! I remember everyone's faces and laughter when everyone found out. I remember thinking that this was awesome! Cut out cookies are my favorite! I remember the entire room having cookies both already decorated and not, all over! The rule was you had to decorate all the cookies before you could eat them. About an hour and a half in (which felt like ten to me) and it actually might have been longer because even the adults were all set with the cookies! Someone broke a cookie and Aunt Joan said to eat it. Aunt Joan said it! Aunt Joan NEVER broke the rules! I remember my excitement that she broke a rule and from the faces of everyone at the table I knew I was gonna be able to eat one of those damn cookies. Soon to no ones surprise a lot of cookies started breaking after that. I don't remember much of what was said exactly, I just remember the laughter and love that you could feel surrounding everyone in the house. By that time I knew that bad things happen sometimes. I also knew that everyone in that house was willing to help each other get through the bad things. That's the Xmas feeling that I got to grow up with. A feeling of absolute certainty that bad things happen, but so do good things and that day was a good thing and we were celebrating without even realizing it.
