Directions:Place chicken, celery, carrots, onion and 2 tsp. of salt in a Dutch oven pot. Add water and bay leaf. Bring to a boil, reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer for 1 hour. Remove chicken from pot. Let cool for 15 minutes and then remove chicken from bone, discarding skin and shredding the chicken. Add pepper to pot and bring broth to a boil.
Meanwhile, combine flour, baking soda, and ½ tsp. salt in a large bowl. Use a pastry blender or your fingers and cut shortening into flour until it resembles coarse meal. Add buttermilk and stir until dry ingredients are moistened.
Turn dough out onto a floured surface and knead 4 to 5 times. Roll out to a ½-inch thickness. Cut dough into 1½ inch pieces and add to boiling broth. Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer 8 - 10 minutes. Stir in chicken. Do not cover pot while dumplings are cooking. |

Notes: Older women likewise are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers or slaves to much wine. They are to teach what is good, and so train the young women to love their husbands and children, to be self controlled, pure, working at home, kind and submissive to their own husbands that the word of God may not be reviled. Titus 2:3-5
