1/3 cup butter, softened
4 cups (1 lb) powdered sugar
1/4 tsp salt
2 to 3 tbsp milk or cream
1 tsp vanilla


For chocolate: blend in 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa

For cream cheese: substitute 3 oz package cream cheese for the butter

For orange or lemon butter: substitute 1 tsp grated orange or lemon peel for the vanilla and 2-3 tbsp orange or lemon juice for the milk.

Directions:

In a large bowl, cream butter.

Add remaining ingredients, beating until frosting is smooth and of spreading consistency.

If necessary, thin with extra milk.

Frosts 9x13 inch cake, or 2 layer cake.

Don't buy store frosting! This it so simple and the taste is so much better than anything you can get in a can.

Hint: blend in the powdered sugar SLOWLY or you will end up with it all over you and your kitchen.
