1/2 cup shortening (part butter)
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1 1/8 cups flour
1/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt

Directions:

Mix the first four ingredients together thoroughly.

Sift the remaining three ingredients and add them to the mixed ingredients.

Drop rounded teaspoons full onto lightly greased baking sheet two inches apart.

Bake at 375 degrees until delicately browned and still slightly soft, between eight and ten minutes.

Cool slightly and then remove from the baking sheet.
