2 cups brown sugar
2 eggs
1 teaspoon baking soda
3½ cups flour
1 cup butter
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup chopped walnuts, add raisins or dates (For Christmas add chopped red & green cherries candied)

Directions:
Directions:
Cream sugar and shortening, add eggs one at a time. Combine all dry ingredients and add vanilla, nuts and raisins. Shape in a loaf and store in refrigerator. Slice thin and bake at 375º 10 to 12 minutes.
