Ingredients:
Ingredients:
1 stick of butter (1/2 cup)
4 cups flour (made need more)
5 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp salt
2 tbsp sugar

1 cup chopped dates
1-1/2 cup milk (approximate)

Directions:
Directions:
Put the first five ingredients in a large bowl and cut in the butter using a fork until the mixture becomes crumbly and the butter is all worked in.

Add the dates, and slowly add just enough milk to make a slightly sticky dough. Knead for a few minutes to thoroughly mix it all together.

On a floured surface, roll out the dough with a rolling pin until about 1 inch thick.

Cut into squares and place on a floured baking sheet.

Bake at 400° for about 12 minutes, or until the bottoms are light golden brown.

Serve with jam and whipped cream.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
When Janice Winks (now Feyen) came to stay with us from New Zealand as an exchange student in high school, she taught us to make these authentic scones. I have loved them almost all my life, and every time I make them, I remember laughing with Janice in my parent's kitchen.
