½ c. shortening (or butter)
½ c. sugar
1 egg, beaten
1 c. hot water
1 c. molasses
2½ c. sifted flour
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. ginger
½ tsp. ground cloves
½ tsp. salt
1½ tsp. baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Cream butter and sugar and add beaten egg. Mix molasses with hot water and add to first mixture. Measure and sift dry ingredients a little at a time to the liquid and add butter mixture. Beat well. Bake in a 8 or 9" square pan lined with waxed paper (or parchment paper) at 350º for 40-45 minutes.

This is such an old-fashioned recipe. Like some others, the added benefit is the fragrance of gingerbread baking and lingering.
