Devils Food Cake Mix / or Yellow Cake Mix

Filling:
1 c. Milk
5T. sifted flour
½ c. margarine
½ c. Crisco shortening
1 c. sugar
1 t. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Prepare cake as directed, turn out and cool. Freeze for 1 hour then cut through the middle creating two layers. (The freezing helps you manage the top layer without it disintegrating in your hands!)

Cook milk and flour over medium heat until thick, stirring constantly with whisk. (Let milk warm before adding flour.) Cook 1 minute past a boil whisking constantly. Remove from heat and cool completely (can refrigerate … about ½ hour). Make sure you whisk vigorously after it cools,

In a mixing bowl combine: margarine, shortening, sugar, and vanilla. Mix until fluffy then add to the flour/milk mixture and beat 5 minutes with electric mixer.

Spread filling between layers of split cake and sprinkle with powdered sugar.

This is really Shirley's recipe but I noticed she had not put it in the cookbook... so I did!!! It is GREAT.... Not overly sweet....
