1 cup butter
1 ½ cups brown sugar
6 eggs
3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp cinnamon
½ tsp each: cloves, nutmeg, mace (or if not found, pumpkin pie spice)
½ cup strong cold coffee
½ tbs raisins
1 cup blanched chopped almonds
½ lb currants
1 lb mixed candied peel,

1. Preheat oven to 275ºf. Prepare fruits, nuts, sift, then measure flour, add salt, baking powder and spices, sift over prepared fruit, being sure it is well coated! Cream butter, add sugar, beat until fluffy. Add eggs one at a time, being sure that eggs are well beaten in after each addition. Add coffee, add flour, fruit mixture, a small amount at a time. Place in a pan that has been lined with 3 thicknesses of brown or parchment paper, grease each layer with butter. Bake 4 hours.
