Red Velvet Cake Recipe

One-half cup shortening
One and cups sugar
Two eggs
Two one ounce bottles of red food coloring
One teaspoon salt
One teaspoon vanilla
One cup[ buttermilk
Two and cups cake flour
One and teaspoons baking soda
one tablespoon white vinegar


Five tablespoons flour
one cup milk
One cup sugar
One cup softened butter
one teaspoon vanilla

Cream shortening, sugar together.
Add eggs.
Make a paste of cocoa and coloring.
Add to first mixture.
Add salt and vanilla to buttermilk and add, alternating with flour mixture.

For icing, cook flour and milk until thick. Cool.
Cream together sugar, butter and vanilla and blend with flour and milk mixture.
Beat until smooth, like whipped cream.
