1 lb. dates, cut up fine
½ c. sugar
½ c. water
1 c. nutmeats , chopped fine
Dough
1 c. shortening
2 c. brown sugar or 1 c. white - 1 c. brown
1 tsp. vanilla
3 eggs
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. salt
4 c. flour ( approximately)

Combine ingredients for filling and cook until thickened, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add the nuts. Cool
Cream shortening, sugar, vanilla and eggs. Sift together dry ingredients and add to the creamed mixture until smooth. Chill dough for a few hours. Divide the chilled dough into two parts. Roll each ¼” thick. Spread with cooled filling. Roll up jelly roll fashion and chill again. for about 3 hours. Slice into ½” thick rings and place 1” apart on greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350º for about 8 min.
