½ cup shortening or butter
¾ cup brown sugar
1 egg
1¼ cups of all purpose flour or whole wheat
1½ tsp baking soda
½ tsp of cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, cloves and allspice
¼ cup sour cream or butter milk
1 tsp vanilla
½ cup chopped nuts
1 cup raisins or dried fruit

Directions:

Cream together butter and sugar; beat until light. Add vanilla and well beaten egg. Add chopped nuts and raisins. Add sifted dry ingredients alternately with sour cream; mix well. Chill; drop by spoonful 2" apart on oiled cookie sheet. Bake in moderate oven at 375ºF for 15 minutes. To prevent drying out bake with a pan of hot water in lower oven level.
