2 c. warm water (105 to 115º)
4 packages active dry yeast
2 c. milk
1/2 lb butter, softened
1 c. sugar
3 tsp salt
4 eggs, beaten
1 tsp nutmeg
8-10 c. bread flour
1 tbsp butter
3/4 c. packed brown sugar
2 tsp cinnamon

Place water in a medium bowl and sprinkle yeast over top. Add 2 tsp sugar and stir slightly. Set aside for 5-10 minutes

Heat milk, 1/2 lb butter and 1/3 cup sugar until milk is hot (it's not necessary to melt butter completely). Place in a large bowl. Add salt, eggs, nutmeg and remaining 2/3 cup sugar. Stir in yeast and 9 cups flour. Knead for 8 -10 minutes, adding remaining cup flour when necessary. Mixture will be sticky. Place in a large greased bowl, cover with plastic wrap and allow to rise until double in size.

Melt 4 tablespoons butter. Roll out dough and brush with melted butter and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon. Fold dough into thrids and cut into 1 inch thick strips. Twist each strip and form into a knot. Butter 5 to 6 9 inch pie pans. Place twists into pan, knot side up. Let rise until double in size.

Bake at 325º for 20-25 mintues. Ice twists while still hot.
 

Caramel Icing

1/2 lb butter
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. cream
3 1/2 c. confectioners' sugar

Directions:
Place butter, brown sugar and cream in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook until smooth. Remove at once and place in a mixing bowl. While mixture is still warm, add confectioner's sugar and beat well.
