1 1/2 c. apple sauce
1/2 c. butter
2 c. sugar
1 egg

2 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp all spice
1 c. chopped raisins
1/2 c. chopped nuts

2 tsp baking soda
1/2 c. boiling water

Directions:
Directions:
Mix butter and sugar together. Add applesauce and egg.

Dissolve baking soda in boiling water and add gradually - alternating with flour mixture.

Add raisins and nuts.

Grease and flower a cake pan and pour in mixture.

Bake at 350º for 45 minutes to 1 hour.

Test with a toothpick.

The toothpick test is vital in many recipes, including this one.

When you think the cake is done - insert a toothpick into the middle of the cake. If there is batter on the toothpick when you remove it - the cake is not yet done. If, however, the toothpick is dry when you remove it - the cake is ready to be eaten!
