⅓ cup butter
6 egg whites
½ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons confectioners sugar
6 egg yolks
1 cup sugar
3 teaspoons vanilla
1 ⅔ cups flour
1 cup chopped toasted walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Melt the butter, then let it cool. Beat the egg whites with the salt until soft peaks form; gradually add the confectioners sugar and beat until stiff, but not dry.

In a separate bowl, beat the egg yolks slightly. Add the sugar and vanilla, beating until thick and creamy. Sprinkle the flour over the whites and pour in the yolks and gently fold until the mixture is half blended.

Add the butter and ¾ of the walnuts and fold until barley mixed. Pour into a buttered and floured 10-inch tube pan. Top with the remaining walnuts.

Bake at 350°F for 40 until done. Cool 10 minutes. Make holes in the cake with a skewer and spoon rum sauce over the cake. When sauce is absorbed turn cake out onto a serving plate.

Rum Sauce

1 ½ cups sugar
1 ¼ cup water
Dash salt
Grated peel of ½ orange and ½ lemon
¼ to ½ cup rum

Combine the sugar, water, salt, and grated peels in a sauce pan. Bring to a boil for 10 minutes and cool. Stir in the rum
