½ c. Crisco
1½ c. sugar
1 tsp. vanilla
2 eggs
1 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. cocoa
1 tbsp. red food coloring
2 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. vinegar

Directions:
Directions:
Cream shortening and sugar.
Add eggs one at a time beating until fluffy after each addition.
Add vanilla and salt, mix well.
Mix cocoa and red food coloring together, then add to batter.
Sift flour, then measure 2 cups.
Add flour alternating with buttermilk, soda and vinegar.
Bake in 2 8" cake pans or 1 long pan.
Bake for 35-40 minutes at 350º.
