½ c. White sugar-burned
¼ c. Boiling water
1 tsp. Vanilla
1c. Milk
3c. Sugar
½ c. Butter
¼ tsp. Baking soda

Directions:
Directions:
Burn the ½ c. Sugar in a large saucepan until melted and dark brown. Add the boiling water and blend well. Add the other ingredients and boil rapidly, stirring constantly. Cook until a soft ball forms in water, usually about 10 min. Place pan in water, stirring and beating until creamy.. When it begins to get creamy, it is ready to go between the layers. You may have to beat a little more for top and sides.

Note: After mixture boils, cook on medium heat.
