1 cup Crisco shortening
1 cup margarine (or butter)
2 cups sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1 Tbsp. corn syrup
3 eggs
5 cups plain flour
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup chopped red candied cherries (or you can do 1/2 red and 1/2 green cherries)
1 cup chopped dates

Directions:

Cream shortening, butter & sugar until light. Add remaining ingredients one at a time in order given. Mix in fruit & nuts by hand. This dough will be very stiff. Divide into 5 or 6 balls and shape into logs. Wrap the logs in wax paper and twist the ends of the paper to close tightly. Chill 1 hour or up to 3 weeks in the refrigerator. You can put in the freezer to save for a longer period of time.
To Bake: Slice 1/4 inch thick and place 1 1/2 inches apart on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 375º for 8-10 minutes.
