1 cup granulated sugar
¾ cup shortening (Crisco)
¼ cup molasses
1 large egg, beaten
2 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground cloves
1 teaspoon ground ginger
¼ teaspoon salt
½ cup granulated sugar or brown sugar

Preheat oven to 375º. Grease cookie sheets; set aside.
Beat granulated sugar and shortening about 5 minutes in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Add molasses and egg; beat until fluffy.
Combine flour, baking soda, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and salt in a medium bowl. Add to shortening mixture; mix until just combined.
Place granulated sugar or brown sugar in a shallow dish. Roll tablespoonsful of dough into 1-inch balls; roll in sugar to coat.
Place 2" apart on cookie sheets. Bake 15 minutes or until lightly browned. Let stand on cookie sheets for 2 minutes. Remove to wire racks; cool completely.
