4 TBSP bacon drippings or vegetable oil
4 TBSP flour
½ tsp pepper
1 c water
2 c tomato sauce (not paste)

Directions:
Directions:
Put oil into skillet and heat until sizzling hot. Add flour and stir until golden brown. Add water slowly, stirring constantly. Add juice & tomatoes if desired and stir. Add pepper. Simmer about 15 to 20 minutes. Add a little water if it gets too thick. Good on rice, biscuits, toast, and even cornbread. Salt to taste.

You can substitute 1 can of good quality diced tomatoes or stewed tomatoes (finely chopped).
