"The tradition of Italian cooking is that of the matriarch. This is the cooking of grandma. She didn't waste time thinking too much about the celery. She got the best celery she could and then she dealt with it."--Mario Batali

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
8 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted
2 sleeves graham crackers, crushed
1 cup sweetened flaked coconut
2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
14-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
2 cups pecans, coarsely chopped

Directions:
Heat the oven to 350 degrees. Lightly coat a 9x13-inch baking pan with butter or cooking spray. Line the pan with parchment paper, allowing enough overhang on the long side to lift the bars from the pan after baking.

In a large bowl, combine the butter and graham crackers. Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan and pat into an even layer to form the crust.

Sprinkle the coconut evenly over the crust. Sprinkle the chocolate chips over the coconut. Pour the condensed milk evenly over the chocolate chips. Sprinkle the pecans evenly over the condensed milk layer. Press the layers down lightly. Transfer to the oven and bake until lightly browned, 30 minutes.

Set aside to cool completely, then cut into 24 bars.

Personal Notes:
From Karissa. When I moved to the south, I found 5-layer bars to be at every potluck and dinner I attended just about. They were delicious and everyone always told me how ‘easy’ they were to make, but I had no recipe to try them myself. Finally, one day I was perusing the Times and Democrat and lo-and-behold there was a recipe for 5-layer bars. I tried them and…they are easy to make and just as yummy as I remember.
