1 c. milk
2 tbsp. cocoa
1/2 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1 beaten egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1-1/4 c. all purpose flour

1 tsp. baking soda
1 tbsp. milk

Heat milk & cocoa until thick. Add shortening, sugar, egg & vanilla. Sift in dry ingredients. Mix soda in milk & add. Beat with egg beater until smooth. Make in 350ºF for 15 minutes.

My mom (Anne Bredin) made this recipe many times over many years. The texture is like an 'Aero' chocolate bar - lots of tiny bubbles. Nice moist cake. Looking on her much used & original recipe card, it has written on the back that the recipe came to her from Anne Badke (nee Paschold) - a long time friend of my mom's.
