1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup butter
1 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp almond extract
4 cups sifted powdered sugar (1 lb)
2 Tbsp milk or water

For chocolate frosting:
Omit almond extract and add 3/4 cup cocoa OR three 1-oz unsweetened chocolate squares melted. Add an extra 1-2 Tbsp milk or water as needed until it is the right consistency.

Cream butter and shortening together. Add extracts. Mix well until creamed. Add sugar gradually. Add milk or water and beat on medium to high speed until light and fluffy.

Keep icing covered with a damp cloth until ready to use. Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to two weeks. Rewhip before using.

*for pure white frosting:
Use shortening instead of butter and add 1/2 tsp butter extract.
