8 oz. cut dates
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. sugar
2/3 c. nuts, chopped

Dough
2 c. shortening
11/2 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. salt
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
3 1/2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon

Directions:
Directions:
Cook dates, sugar and water together until thick. Cool ; add nuts.
Cream shortening, sugar , and salt. Add eggs and vanilla; blend. Sift flour, baking soda and cinnamon; add to creamed mixture. Divide dough into two parts. Roll each part to 1/4-inch thickness. Spread filling on dough and roll as for jelly roll. Place in refrigerator to chill thoroughly. Cut in thin slices. Bake 10-12 minutes on greased cookie sheet at 375º.
