Directions:Dough: Follow directions on the box for putting ingredients for the dough. Add 2 tblsp of sugar to the dough and then form into a ball and remove from the mixing bowl. Knead the dough for 5 minutes. You will need extra flour to put on your hands when kneading the dough so it does not stick to your hands. Once kneading is complete, put the disk of dough into a bowl for 1/2 hour so it can rise. Cover the bowl loosely with a clean hand towel and keep near the oven area where it is likely to be a little warmer in the kitchen which helps the dough rise. When the 1/2 hour is up, separate the dough (2/3 dough will be placed in a 13"x18" jelly roll pan and 1/3 will be placed in a 13"x 9" pan The dough will be very springy so you need to work it gently into each corner of the pans while stretching gently.
Apples: Peel the apples and cut into 1/4 inch slices. Put the slices into a bowl with the 2-3 cups of water, squeeze the 2-3 lemon wedges into the water to keep the applex from turning brown. Place the apples one slice at a time into the dough, you can place them in a single layer row or get creative with a design of your choice. Once all the items are placed into the dough in both pans, sprinkle the cold butter pieces sporadically throughout the top of the apples. Mix the cinnamon and sugar together in a bowl and sprinkle over the apples and butter. Bake at 375º for 22-25 minutes or until golden brown.
Topping: Mix the confectioner's sugar, milk, and vanilla together. When the apple cake is still warm, drizzle the topping over the apples. |
