Ingredients:
½ cup Crisco

2 eggs, separated

1½ teaspoons baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
1 cup sour milk or buttermilk

Directions:
Cream the shortening until it is the consistency of thick cream. Add the sugar a little at a time, stirring after each addition until the mixture is light and fluffy. Add the well-beaten egg yolks and blend thoroughly.

Add enough hot water to the cocoa powder to make a smooth paste. Then add enough to make one cupful of the cocoa mixture. Add to the creamed mixture.

Sift together the flour, soda and salt, and add alternately with the sour milk to which the vanilla has been added. Mix thoroughly. Fold in carefully the stiffly beaten egg whites.

Pour into two greased and lightly floured 9-inch layer cake pans.

Bake for 30-40 minutes at 375º.

Frost as desired.
