2/3 cup buttermilk
6 Tbsp unsalted butter, melted and cooled
1 Tbsp grated orange zest
1/2 cup orange juice
1 large egg
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
6 ounces (1 1/2 cups) fresh cranberries, chopped coarse
1/2 cup pecans or walnuts, toasted and chopped coarsely.

Adjust oven rack to the middle position and preheat to 350 degrees.
Grease 8 1/2 by 4 1/2 inch loaf pan.
Stir the buttermilk, melted butter, zest, orange juice and egg together in a bowl.
In a large bowl whisk the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder and baking soda together.
Stir the wet mixture into the flour mixture.
Stir with rubber spatula until just moistened.
Gently fold in the cranberries and nuts, do not overmix.
Scrape batter into the prepared loaf pan and smooth the top.
Bake until golden brown and skewer comes out clean.
Baking time is between 55 to 75 minutes. Rotate the pan once in the middle of baking.
Allow loaf to cool in pan for 10 minutes.
Then turn onto a wire rack and cool 1 hour before serving.

I remember Marlene making loaves of these around Thanksgiving. When you went into the store around that season, she’d say “just a minute I have something for you”. She’d disappear into her private living space and emerge with a loaf wrapped in tin foil and a fancy string bow.
This bread seldom made it to Thanksgiving as mom and I would cut pieces to sneak.
