1 cup boiling water
1 cup shortening, softened
1 cup brown sugar, packed
1 cup molasses
3 eggs, beaten
3 cups sifted flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. salt
1½ tsp. ginger
1½ tsp. cinnamon
½ tsp. cloves

Icing sugar to dust the cake.

Preheat oven to 350º.
Grease and flour a 13” x 9” x 2” pan.

Add boiling water to shortening and stir until melted.
Add sugar, molasses, and eggs. Mix thoroughly.
Sift dry ingredients together.
Add dry ingredients to molasses mixture; mix well.
Pour into pan, and bake at 350º for 30 - 40 minutes, or until toothpick comes out clean.
Dust with icing sugar when cooled.
