3/4 cup shortening
1 cup sugar, divided
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup chopped fruit-flavored or spiced gumdrops
(I prefer fruit flavored...)
2 large egg whites

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°.
Cream shortening and 3/4 cup sugar until light and fluffy.
Beat in almond extract.
In another bowl, whisk flour, baking soda and salt;
gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well.
Stir in gumdrops.

In a separate bowl, beat egg whites until soft peaks form.
Gradually add remaining sugar, beating until stiff peaks form.
Fold into dough.

Drop by level tablespoons 2 in. apart onto ungreased baking sheets.
Bake until golden brown, 12-15 minutes.
Cool 1 minute before removing from pans to wire racks to cool completely.

When I was about 8 or 9 years old,
Santa brought me a 'gum-drop tree'...(a little plastic tree about a foot tall...
with lots of clear plastic branches...and on each branch was a gumdrop...)
Every year after that, he filled the tree up again....to my delight! lol
When we were kids you didn't have sweets much during the year...but at Christmastime...(and Easter)
you were allowed to indulge...
