½ cup Crisco
1½ cups sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 eggs
2¼ cups sifted cake flour
2½ teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons milk

Directions:
Directions:
Stir shortening to soften. Gradually add sugar and cream thoroughly (12 to 15 minutes at medium-high speed on mixer). Add vanilla.

Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each.

Sift flour with baking powder and salt; add to creamed mixture alternately with milk, beating after each addition.

Bake in two paper-lined 9x1½-inch round pans in moderate oven (375º) about 23 minutes. (I grease and flour the cake pans.)

Use icing of your choice with coconut added, if desired, or chocolate icing.
