4 oz Baker's german sweet chocolate
⅓ cup water
1 ⅔ cup flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
½ cup butter
1 cup sugar
1 tsp vanilla
3 egg yolks
⅔ cup buttermilk
3 stiff-beaten egg whites

Frosting:
1 egg
⅔ cup evaporated milk
⅔ cup sugar
¼ cup butter
dash of salt
1 ⅓ cup flaked coconut
½ cup chopped pecans

Directions:
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350. Grease and lightly flour two 8 inch round pans, or a 13 x 9 pan. Heat chocolate and water till chocolate melts; cool. Combine flour, baking soda, and salt. Beat butter about 30 seconds. Add sugar and vanilla; beat till fluffy. Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating 1 minute after each. Beat in chocolate mixture. Add dry ingredients and buttermilk alternately to beaten mixture, beating after each addition. Fold in egg whites. Turn into pans. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. Cool 10 minutes, remove from pans, finish cooling.
Fill and frost top with frosting. To frost sides, double recipe for frosting.

Frosting Directions:
In a saucepan, beat egg slightly. Stir in milk, sugar, butter and salt. After combining, cook and stir over medium heat about 12 minutes or until thickened and bubbly. Stir in coconut and pecans. Cool thoroughly, spread on cake. Frosts top on one 13 x 9 cake or tops of two 8 or 9 inch layers.
