2 small or 1 large pkg. dates, cut fine
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1 orange rind
3/4 c. nuts, finely chopped

Dough:
1 c. butter
2 eggs
1 1/2 c. dark sugar, firmly packed
1 1/2 c. quick oats
3 1/4 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
1. Filling: Combine dates, sugar, and water. Boil for 10 minutes, stirring constantly. Beat until smooth, add orange rind and nuts. Cool.
2. Dough: Cream butter and sugar well, add eggs one at a time and beat until light and fluffy. Add oats and rest of sifted dry ingredients, and vanilla. Chill dough several hours.
3. Roll out 1/4 of dough at a time to 1/8-inch thickness on floured surface. Cut with glass, spread 1 tsp. of filling on a round, cover with another round, press edges firmly together.
4. Place on greased cookie sheet, bake at 375º until lightly browned.
