Ingredients:
Ingredients:
6 c. sugar
2 c. cream
¼ lb. butter
¼ tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. vanilla
2 lb. nuts

Directions:
Directions:
Pour 2 c. sugar into heavy iron skillet and place over low flame. Begin stirring with wooden spoon and keep sugar moving so that it will not scorch. It will take almost ½ hour to completely melt sugar and at no time let it smoke or cook so fast that it turns dark. It should be about the color of light brown sugar.

As soon as you have the sugar started to heat in the skillet, pour the remaining 4 c. sugar together with the cream into a deep, heavy kettle and set it over a low flame to cook slowly while you are melting sugar in the skillet . As soon as the sugar is melted begin pouring the rest into the kettle of boiling milk and sugar. Now the real secret of mixing is to pour a very fine stream from the skillet.
Continue cooking and stirring until the mixture forms a firm ball when dropped into cold water.

After test is made turn out flame and immediately add baking soda, stirring vigorously as it is mixed add butter, allowing it to melt as you stir. Set off burner, but not out of doors or in a cold place for about 20 minutes. Then add vanilla and begin beating with wooden spoon and beat until mixture is thindk and heavy, having a dull appearance instead of a glosy shine. Add nuts and mix then pour in a greased pan.
