Ingredients: Bars: ⅔ c. shortening ¾ c. sugar 1 egg ½ tsp. vanilla ½ tsp. grated orange peel 2 c. sifted enriched flour 1½ tsp. baking powder ¼ tsp. salt 4 tsp. milk
Fig Filling: 1 c. chopped figs grated peel of 1 lemon 1 cup boiling water ½ c. sugar 2 T. enriched flour

Directions:Bars: Thoroughly cream shortening and sugar. Add egg; beat until mixture is light and fluffy. Add vanilla and grated orange peel; mix thoroughly. Sift dry ingredients; stir into creamed mixture together with milk. Divide dough in half. Chill 1 hour so it's easy to handle. Roll dough ⅛ inch thick. Cut in long strips 3 inches wide. Spread half the strips with fig filling and cover with remaining strips. Press together with a fork; cut strips in 2 inch lengths. Bake on greased cookie sheet in moderate (350º) oven for about 20 minutes.
Fig Filling: Add 1 c. chopped figs and grated lemon peel to 1 c. boiling water. Mix ½ c. sugar and 2 T. enriched flour; add some of hot mixture and stir into remaining hot mixture. Cook 5 minutes.
