1/3 cup butter
1/3 cup shortening
2 1/4 cups flour
2/3 cup sugar

1 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon vanilla
dash salt

Directions:
Oven to 375º
Mix butter and shortening with electric mixer until softened and creamy. Add half the flour. Add sugar, egg, milk, baking powder, vanilla and salt. Mix until combined. Mix or stir in remaining flour... do not overmix! Divide dough in half. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill at least 3 hours.
Roll chilled dough on floured surface to 1/8 inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutters. Place shapes on ungreased cookie sheet. Only re-roll dough once more. Do not knead, just gently press scraps together. Bake 7-8 minutes or until bottoms are slightly brown. You want caramelization. Cool on pan one minute then remove to wire rack. Ice as desired with royal icing or cookie glue and colored sugar.

This is the best recipe I have found over the years. They are tender and delicious, but sturdy enough to decorate with sprinkles or turn into cookie sticks!
