French Onion Soup Recipe

½ cup butter
8 lg yellow onions sliced
1 tsp sugar
7 cups beef broth
8 slices french bread sliced and toasted
2oz parmesan cheese grated
2oz gruyere cheese sliced
½ cup dry sherry wine

Directions:
Directions:
Melt butter; add onions. Cover and simmer for 1 hour, Remove lid. Add sugar and continue to cook on medium high until onions are browned and caramelized. Stir in broth, salt, pepper, and Sherry. Simmer 15 - 20 minutes more.
Ladle soup into oven safe bowls. Cover with bread and cheese. Put under a broiler until cheese is melted than remove. BOWLS WILL BE HOT!
