1 cup shortening
2 cups sugar
3 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2½ cups flour
½ cup cocoa
2 tsp. soda
¼ tsp. salt
¾ cup sour milk (buttermilk)
¾ cup hot water

Sour Cream Icing:
1 cup sour cream
1½ cup sugar
2 Tbs. butter
1 tsp vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Cream: shortening, sugar, add eggs, vanilla & beat well. Add dry ingredients and milk. Mix well, add hot water.
Bake in 3 layer pans @ 350º till done.

Icing:
Boil sour cream and sugar to a soft ball stage on medium high heat. (use a candy thermometer). Add vanilla and butter. Remove from heat and beat to spreading consistency, which will take several minutes. This is a yummy icing for the devil's food cake.
