½ cup shortening
1 ½ cup sugar
1 cup thick, unsweetened applesauce
2 eggs
2 cups sifted all purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking powder
½ teaspoon baking soda
¼ teaspoon nutmeg
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon cloves
½ raisins
½ chopped walnuts

Directions:

Set oven at 350º
Grease 8-inch square baking pan. Line with waxed paper. Grease paper. Cream shortening and sugar together..in mixing bowl. until light and fluffy...
Add eggs and beat well...
Add applesauce and mix.
Sift dry ingredients together... Beat into batter until smoothly combined...
Add raisins and nuts.
Pour into prepared pan... Bake 45-60 minutes or until done.
Let cool in pan.
Makes 8 or more servings. It makes a good brunch cake...
