1 cup cut dates
1-1/4 cup boiling water
1 tsp baking soda
1/2 cup shortening
1-1/2 cup sugar
2 eggs, beaten
1 tsp. vanilla
1-1/4 cup sifted flour
1 T. cocoa
1 tsp. salt
1 pkg chocolate chips
1/2 cup walnuts or pecans

Directions:
Directions:
Mix dates and water; boil, simmer 5 minutes then cool. Stir in baking soda. Cream shortening, 1 cup sugar, eggs and vanilla. Sift flour, cocoa and salt. Add flour mixture and dates to creamed mixture. Beat until blended. Turn batter into pan. Bake at 350* for approximately 35 minutes. For topping mix remaining sugar, chocolate chips and nuts. Sprinkle over batter.
