1 t. baking soda
1 c. boiling water
1 c. chopped dates
3/4 c. raisins
2 T. soft butter
1 c. sugar
1 t. vanilla
1 egg
1 1/3 c. flour
3/4 c. chopped pecans or walnuts

Directions:
Directions:
Pour soda and boiling water over chopped dates and raisins. Set aside.
Cream butter and sugar. Add vanilla and egg; beat well. Add flour and mix. Pour in the fruit and nuts. Mix well. Bake in buttered 9 x 5 loaf pan. 350 for 60-70 minutes (test with a toothpick in the center).
About 270 calories per slice.

I grew up with this wonderful bread, which was usually served around the holidays. It'll make the house smell SO GOOD. It's nice to make it in several smaller pans and give it as gifts, too! Special note: an 8 oz. box of dates equals about 1 1/2 c. chopped dates.
