"A man who was fond of wine was offered some grapes at dessert after dinner. "Much obliged," said he, pushing the plate aside; "I am not accustomed to take my wine in pills."--Jean Antheleme Brillat-Savarin, The Physiology of Taste

Ingredients:
Ingredients:
2 cups self-rising White Lily flour
½ cup Crisco
1½ cups buttermilk
¼ cup melted butter

Directions:
Directions:
Put flour into a large mixing bowl and cut in the Crisco until pieces are about the size of grains of rice. Stir in the buttermilk. Knead a few times, roll out on a floured board or countertop to ¾” thickness. Do not work dough too much or add too much flour or the biscuits will be dry and tough.

Cut into circles and place on an ungreased cookie sheet and bake about 10-12 minutes in a preheated 450º oven. When done, paint melted butter on the tops and serve.

You can also cut the dough into shapes to amuse children, or you can make what I call “bachelor biscuits” by pulling the equivalent of a biscuit size straight from the bowl (omitting the roll out and cut steps) and placing the ragged dough on the cookie sheet. These biscuits will be craggy when done, but the flavor is the same and the crags hold the melted butter well.

Good ole’ down-to-earth, easy-to-make homemade biscuits.
