Directions:
Dissolve lye and water in fresh air stirring constantly.
Add Borax to solution, if desired. Cool to room temperature.

Boil lard or tallow until it doesn't spatter, and strain, if necessary.
Add lye mixture in fine stream to lard stirring slowly and constantly, for about 5-10 minutes.
Cover and set in warm place overnight.
Cut and, if greasy and lye settles to the bottom, cut it in fine pieces, and add 1 quart water, bring slowly to a boil, stirring occasionally.
Stir until no lumps, if ropy, set off in warm place and cool, but if water isn't enough, add more (cold or hot) till it thickens like honey.

Have vinegar handy to remove any lye if it gets on skin.

Personal Notes:
Personal Notes:
Grandma Anna told my mom, Ione, this recipe, with my mom writing it down. We never did make this recipe but I remember staying with Grandma and Grandpa Schroeder and getting a bar of soap she had made from upstairs in a storage room where she had several bars stored.
