½ c. shortening
¾ c. sugar
1 egg
2 c. flour (plus more for rolling)
¼ tsp. salt
½ tsp. baking powder
½ tsp. soda
2 or 3 T. milk
1 tsp. vanilla

Directions:
Directions:
Line baking sheets with parchment. Preheat oven to 350º.

Combine flour, soda, baking powder, and salt in a medium bowl and set aside. Cream shortening and sugar in large mixing bowl. Add egg and vanilla, beat well. Add flour mixture alternately with milk and mix until just combined.

Dump onto a lightly floured surface and roll out to ¼ inch thick. Cut into shapes and place on prepared baking sheet and bake about 12 to 15 minutes until very lightly brown on edges. Do not over bake; cookies will be very light in color.

This is my aunt Mary Pace's sugar cookie recipe which she made every Christmas, tons of them, decorated to perfection!!

I found the dough a bit easier to roll out if I chilled it for an hour or so. And, since I'm not big on decorating with frosting, I just pressed a little bit of sugar lightly into the surface of the dough before cutting them out.
