6 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1 tsp allspice
1 tsp ginger
1 tsp cloves
1 tsp cinnamon
1 cup brown suger
1/3 c shortening
1 1/2 c dark molasses
2/3 c cold water

Directions:
Directions:
Mix all the dry ingredients into a flour sifter (or fine strainer) and sift them into a bowl. Set aside.

Measure brown sugar and add shortening in separate bowl. Mix until creamy. Then add molasses and water. Stir to mix well.
Add dry ingredients one cup at a time until all mixed in.
Cover with large plate and chill dough for 1 hour to make it easier to handle.
Preheat oven to 350
Roll a quarter of the dough out on a floured surface ( make sure to flour your rolling pin)
Keep it about 1/2 inch thick
cut out circles or shapes with cookies cutter and leave at least 2 inches between cookies on pan (they will get puffy and big as they bake)
Bake for 12-15 minutes

These cookies are soft, chewy and amazing. We made them for neighbors for Christmas and we had so many people ask for the recipe. Recipe comes from Kirsten's Cookbook (An American Girl:Recipes from the Frontier)
